I heart art...

If you live in the Vancouver area, you MUST make a trip to the Art Gallery before September 13th for the Vermeer, Rembrandt and The Golden Age of Dutch Art exhibit. I have a slight obsession with Vermeer and his detailed and precise work that captured scenes of everyday Dutch life during the 17th century.

The exhibit includes some of the finest paintings by the masters of the Golden Age, as well as an outstanding selection of drawings and decorative arts drawn from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. I absolutely fell in love with the exquistely detailed still life flower paintings by Rachel Ruysch who was one of the very few female artists successful during the Golden Age. I highly suggest getting the audio guide that goes along with the exhibit which will give you an inside look into the personal lives of the artists. And when you're done at the exhibit do the like the Dutch and sit, relax and have a delicious espresso at the lovely outdoor Art Gallery cafe (no clogs neccesary).

The Anatomy Lesson, Rembrandt, 1632

Still Life of Flowers in Glass Vase, Rachel Ruysch, 1742

The Milkmaid, Johannes Vermeer, 1658

The Art of Painting, Johannes Vermeer, 1666

Ease the pain...

After my skydiving jump was canceled AGAIN because of the crap weather situation in Vancouver, I had to find a way to turn my utter state of disappointment into a day of excitement and fun and what could be more fun that a day of shopping... in Seattle! All thoughts of jumping out of a plane and doing something I've wanted to do my whole life had vanished and were replaced with lovely thoughts of hitting the shopping jackpot at Forever 21, Nordstroms and Anthropologie.

I found the most AMAZING shoes...

And some great pieces of jewelry at ridiculously low prices...

And I wanted to buy all of these at Nordstroms...

and was scarily close... and then realized I really don't need ANOTHER pair of high heels...

Make room on your coffee table...

I've already dusted off the perfect spot for my fabulous new coffee table hard cover. Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist has recently published a limited edition hardcover that celebrates all of the fantastic street style he has photographed while traversing the globe. The book, along with Mr. Schuman's brilliant blog are an ode to personal style and fashion in it's most unique, raw and unaltered form. His candid photographs have not only become a source of inspiration for almost everyone involved in the fashion industry, including fashion bloggers like myself, but also for ordinary people who need that little bit of inspiration in developing their own personal style.

The release date for the book is August 18th, so I've pre-ordered the limited edition hardcover from Amazon, but there is a paperback version available too, also from Amazon.

Paul and Sunny are on a mission to showcase Vancouver's most stylish personalites and kudos to them for being much needed pioneers of the relatively unknown Vancouver fashion scene!

I'm in love... with a label...

Typically when I first look at new a clothing line or a brand of clothing, there are pieces I absolutely adore and some I could definitely do without. Well I've just stumbled across a line of clothing that perfectly defines my style; bright, outrageous color palettes, breezy, feminine silk pieces and a touch of tough with leather, zipper details and cut-outs scattered throughout. The label is called Warehouse and I want it all. I feel as though when planning this new collection they must have called me up, asked me what I most absolutely love about fashion, style and trends at the moment and then magically created it specifically around my tastes! Check out the full collection on ASOS. It's hard to pick favorites out of favorites, but my bank account balance is telling me I have no choice...

Not so summery summer songs...

I go through some very peculiar music phases where I will only listen to the same five songs over and over again for a couple months and then sporadically choose five new songs to become obsessed with. At this very moment, my five songs are a touch on the depressing side; very unsummery and quite heavy and emotional for the breezy summer I'm having, but nonetheless these songs are beautifully sung and have the most gorgeous lyrics and you must take a listen.

Sia, Breathe Me
Snow Patrol & Martha Wainwright, Set the Fire to the Third Bar
The Frames, Falling Slowly
Ray LaMontagne, Trouble (this is the live version from Abbey Road)
Damien Rice, The Blowers Daughter

Thandie is dandy!

I have always adored Thandie Newton's off beat, quirky and fashion forward style. I am just absolutely loving her whole look here...

Attending the annual Serperntine Gallery Summer Party in London, she looks like her own priceless piece of art in head to toe Matthew Williamson.

She also looks picture perfect in this lovely Chanel dress attending a movie premiere in 08'...

I love that she keeps her make-up, jewelry and accessories completely minimal and lets the amazing clothing and her glorious smile make the statement, like here in Calvin Klein...

Bring on the falling leaves...

As much as I adore the summer season in all it's shining glory, I have a soft spot for Fall. I feel a twinge of excitement and anticipation as store employees start removing swimsuits, shorts and sandals off the display shelves and begin replacing them with warm and cozy heavy knits, an endless selection of glorious jackets and fabulous boots that will leave me secretly praying for the temperature to drop a.s.a.p. I may not be entirely ready to trudge around in the snow in my 4 inch heels, but I am definitely thrilled to start planning my attack on the new Fall/Winter collections that are bound to start popping up in retail stores (if they haven't already....)

Urban Outfitters has kindly given us a sneak peak at their early Fall catalog and all of a sudden I find myself cursing the 35 degree weather!

First Dates; The disturbing truth...

So I've become a bit of a reluctant pro on the art of the first date having been through far too many of them in the last while. I've mastered it all; the greeting, the first impression, the best conversation topics, when to laugh, when to shut up, the ideal outfit choice, the perfectly calculated amount of PDA, when to say goodbye and THE goodbye (by far the trickiest part).

I would love to say that all of these first dates have been perfectly played out exactly how I pictured them in my mind beforehand, with a Bradley Cooper look alike showing up at my door, dressed in ripped denim, a fitted blazer and a sweet pair of kicks, holding a handful of freshly picked lilacs in one hand and the loveliest bottle of Chablis in the other. In my first date fantasy, this perfect man would open every door for me, compliment me on my outfit at least three times for good measure, laugh at all my ridiculously dumb jokes, keep his cell phone off (or at least on vibrate), never brag about how much money he makes, have an infectious smile that makes me giddy, order chocolate fondue without having to ask me, pay the bill without waiting to see if I would offer (because I obviously would...) and end the date with the most delightfully seducing kiss that leaves me wanting more. Oh how fantasy and reality can be so inexplicably uncommon!

Here's the cruel and unsettling reality of the first date... (These are all warning signs/ flashing red lights that should be taken seriously... trust me)

~ He show's up wearing a bejeweled shirt that should never be that tight, GYM runners with jeans and a murse (I cringe even thinking about it)
~ He leaves his Blackberry on the table to check every 3.5 minutes.
~ In an attempt to look 'cool' he insists on going to the grungiest pub for a drink because he knows someone who works there.
~ He tells you he works as an importer/exporter/ business owner/ construction worker or in real estate; He is a drug dealer.
~ He spends over 3 hours bragging about how much money he makes, only to get his credit card declined when paying for dinner (classic!)
~ He acts completely disinterested and too cool for school all night then begs you to come back to his place to 'make out a bit with our clothes on' (his exact words)
~ He gets ridiculously smashed and thinks a swift slap on the ass is a lovely way to end the date (my favorite!)
~ He admits to having some very odd mental issues (not ideal first date conversation)
~ He looks you straight in the eye, gets a very serious look on his face and says "you remind me so much of my ex..."

After dealing with all of these extremely unpleasant scenarios you might assume I have sworn off men for good, bought a dozen cats and an endless supply of cookie dough ice cream and retreated to my apartment to live a solitary and secluded life as an old maid... But no! I still have a microscopic sliver of hope that my charming and witty Bradley Cooper look alike is still out there and if HE slaps my ass, I might let it slide.

Perfection...

This look is just sublime. The airyness, the lightness, the loveliest nude shade
of the dress, the perfect gold sandal on the rough cobble stoned Parisian street... She makes it look effortless!

Why do I torture myself...

I'm not sure why I do it, perhaps I secretly enjoy the pain of not being able to have something I so longingly want, but I find myself constantly visiting amazing online stores only to find the most gorgeous, lovely pieces all the while knowing they don't ship to Canada.

I recently made the sickening mistake of going on the Top Shop website where I found myself once again saddened, depressed and just straight up pissed off to not being able to have these perfect pieces I immediately feel in love with. Life can be so unfair...

Dear Top Shop,
I hate you for your unfair and sucky shipping rules, but I love you for everything else. If you love me, please ship me these items at your earliest convenience...

Yours truly,
The Loveleighest
